Water — Contamination
Digital Illustration
This was actually the first piece I did out of the three illustrations. Water is not as clean as it seems. It almost appears slimy in this image. I wanted to portray the negative side of the water recycling system—the harmful bacteria and toxins that exist in the water we drink. In terms of colour, I didn’t want to go for the traditional blue commonly associated with water, as it doesn’t accurately represent its actual colour, which is clear. Upon reflection, I viewed water in this case, as kind of a medium for these pathogens to thrive. Contaminated, turbid and repulsive.
Air — Not Light at All
Digital Illustration
This was the hardest piece to create my own interpretation of, but it was also the most exciting, as it is an invisible element with so much depth and variation, depending on the situation and environment. I played with the idea of the flow of particles and matter that exists in the air we breathe. Although we can’t see them, I envisioned them chaotically colliding with each other every second, connected through trails, and others disconnecting in vast areas of space. I worked in multiple layers, experimenting with the changes in saturation levels of each layer to highlight the complexity of something so airy and light, yet dense and compact at the same time.
Fire — Dances of Hell
Digital Illustration
For this particular piece, I noticed the outlines of the basic shapes reminded me of spirituality and ghosts. As it does to many people, fire scares me, and so when I saw those ghostly silhouettes, I entertained with the idea of fear and deadly beings in a playful way—I wanted them to almost look like they’re dancing in the fires of hell.
