‘Tuberosum’ begins with a contradiction: a material that is both alive and processed, organic and technological, stable yet constantly in flux.

Animated, the unexpected moving tail conveys an aliveness, presenting technology not as a hard, mechanical material but as an organic, evolving system. It is a hybrid object, if you will — emerging between states that is neither artificial nor organic.

And to our active participant of the day — the mashed potato introduces a visceral, sensorial quality that may provoke initial feelings of confusion, attraction, discomfort, or perhaps humour. Reminiscent of the 1970s Smash ad on instant mashed potatoes, it hints at the abstraction from its origin through industrial processes of dehydration and reconstitution. Uncanny, jittery in its strange ways, is what makes the encounter an experience rather than an observation. It imagines a posthuman world in which matter continues to act and transform beyond our human existence.
